IS YOUR CUP OVERFLOWING?
“He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.” John 3:30 NLT
At a time when John the Baptist could have easily been jealous or frustrated when the ministry of Jesus came on to the scene; he instead trusted in what God had revealed —- Jesus was indeed the Son of God. #truth
John then explains to his followers the difference between himself and Jesus (the Messiah) with a beautiful analogy about a groom and his best friend.
“The one who gets the bride is, by definition, the bridegroom. And the bridegroom’s friend, his ‘best man’—that’s me—in place at his side where he can hear every word, is genuinely happy. How could he be jealous when he knows that the wedding is finished and the marriage is off to a good start? “That’s why my cup is running over. This is the assigned moment for him to move into the center, while I slip off to the sidelines.” John 3:27-29 MSG
“While I slip off to the sidelines”
Friends we have so much to learn from these scriptures when it comes to both our personal relationship with Christ and our workplace. John didn’t want any credit and he didn’t want others to think he was greater than Jesus. He just wanted to be part of a movement that changed lives, offered peace and promised eternity. He knew his role.
As we read and become students AND doers of God’s word we learn the character of Jesus. Through His word we learn to think less about ourselves. We learn to love, we learn to forgive, we learn that we can be honest in our prayers, we learn that Jesus ate with sinners and healed the sick. We learn that Jesus died for us. Daily we will see Him becoming more and more of our focus.
These verses were the first I read in 2023 – just reading in order day to day. I’m holding on to this scripture – post it notes & bookmarks! John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus and promoted His ministry. Are we too preparing a way? I pray for awareness this year on becoming less and less so that He, my Father, can shine through me and become greater and greater. #radiant
From a workplace leadership perspective, I know we can apply this lesson as well. How often are we willing to step aside and let someone else lead or make decisions? Or how often are we willing to accept a position of being the “best man (or rooted woman!)” and supporting someone else so that the work they do shines. Are you willing to give someone else the spotlight? Are you willing to give others the credit they deserve?
I want to be aware of opportunities with my team and colleagues to stand beside them, not above them, so they get the spotlight. It’s really not about me at all. It’s about Him and it’s about them. This is how we have an overflowing cup.
