Blindfolded Trust
Seventeen year old Max Nelson is the youngest person on the US Nordic Skiing team. His story caught my attention because not only is Max the youngest; he’s also legally blind. Can you imagine skiing as fast as you can down the side of a mountain AND being legally blind? Max relies on his Dad to guide him via a radio that he wears. As he makes his way down the mountain he listens to the voice telling him which way to turn. He only has seconds to react. All the way down. That is an incredible amount of TRUST!
Jeanne Guyon’s letter 59 in her book Intimacy with Christ, is titled Complete Rest. She starts the letter by writing, “My desire is to give myself totally to God and to love Him far more than I love myself.” This is trust! Her letter reminds us that God is faithful, that He is good, and that He protects what belongs to Him. All He wants is for us to TRUST Him without question. To “trust God as if you were blindfolded.”
As I’ve thought about Max’s story I couldn’t help but relate this to letter 59. Max is so trusting of his Dad that he will put on skis and head down a mountain although he can’t see. But yet we are often reluctant to close our own eyes and fully trust our Father. The one we call Abba Father. The one who gave His Son to take our sins so that we could experience life without sin’s control over us.
Complete rest is finding trust in God and knowing that it is not dependent on life’s circumstances. It’s simply based on our willingness to seek God, to keep learning His word, to put doubt and fear aside, and to totally give up one’s self. He will guide you. This is trust. God is there and He will whisper in your ear as you make your way down the mountain. He has you in His hand. We trust God as if we were blindfolded by just knowing that “God is! This is enough.”
Happy Friday!
