All He Is

“But you, O Lord, are a God of compassion and mercy, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.” Psalm 86:15

As we continue in our week of thankfulness, I’m thankful that every single time I open the Bible I learn more and more about the character of God. From Genesis to Revelation the living word reveals who God is to us. He’s

Gracious

Kind

Fair

Pure

Merciful

Faithful

Truthful

Patient

Just

Perfect

Loving (God is love!)

Compassionate

Trustworthy

Holy

Righteous

But most of all I’m thankful that when we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit takes up residence inside us. It took me many many years to understand this, but it’s a truth that is life changing. And when we have the Holy Spirit living inside of us, He leads us and teaches us to be more and more like our Father. What!?

“Teach me your ways, O Lord, that I may live according to your truth! Grant me purity at heart, so that I may honor you.” Psalm 86:11.

David recognized God’s character and he wanted to have this same character. His prayer was focused on “teach me” and “grant me” – he wanted to learn and to improve his obedience. Through the power of the Holy Spirit we too can become more gracious, more kind, more loving, more patient; more and more like our Heavenly Father. No person, or strong will or self-help book can change us. Transformation comes only from God. Read Psalm 86 out loud today and pray these scriptures. #lifechanging

God’s character is never changing. He’s the same today as He was yesterday. He’s the beginning and the end. And I know in the moments when my own character is lacking, or when my love is not flowing like it should, or when the words I’ve spoken carry bitterness that God will place a convictiction on my heart. He’s always there guiding, teaching us in love and with compassion. Thank you Lord! Even in our times of unfaithfulness, God remains faithful. (2 Timothy 2:13).

Father, we know You are a God of compassion and mercy. Thank you for this living word you’ve given to us. Thank you for your character and revealing to us who You are as we read and study Your word. Thank you for never giving up on us as we learn to grow more and more like You. Amen
