Inside Beauty…
“A beautiful woman who lacks discretion is like a gold ring on a pig’s snout.” Proverbs 11:22
Solomon has a way with his descriptions in Proverbs, makes you really stop and reflect. Many of us women are so concerned with our appearance and that our decisions at work make us look good. We want to have the latest clothes trends, drive a nice car, get our hair done, have a fresh mani/pedi, exercise to stay fit, eat lunch with the in crowd, say all the right things, not rock the boat, and appear on the outside to have it all going on. We desire to be beautiful and successful and be liked by all in the office.
But…having physical attraction without inner discretion can be ugly. Discretion is described as the freedom to decide what should be done in a particular situation. When we lack discretion we can make poor decisions. Poor decisions can lead to big mistakes, hurting people, loss of profits, and may make it difficult to trust coworkers or even want to work with them. We may be trying to outwardly look “beautiful” but on the inside we are pretty ugly – like pig pen ugly.
Solomon describes the lack of discretion – the lack of making wise choices – like a gold ring in a pig’s snout. First thing that came to my mind is the saying “like putting lipstick on a pig.” We try to cover up our inner ugly with outer beauty when we make decisions. We lack discretion in decision making that lands us in mud.
It is not wrong to want to look your best and feel beautiful and make decisions that make us look good – but if we make decisions for gain versus doing the right thing and if we hurt people but boast how much we care – are we the pig with the gold ring? Ouch.
Phew…this Proverb cut deep into my heart strings. Ladies, when we put God first and allow Him to transform us on the inside, that is the only beauty we should want!
My take away – try to make wise decisions daily that will reflect godly beauty on the inside and out.
