28 DAYS
Earlier this week I was listening to a business related podcast emphasizing the importance of staying in the know as it relates to your field: market trends, new technology, customer demands, etc. The speaker was encouraging his listeners to keep educating themselves to support their personal and professional growth.
Well, that got me thinking. Lisa Zagers Williams and I recently led a small group discussion on “Who do you work for?” – which just happens to be the first chapter of Allison Pelphrey’s book, “God in the Workplace.” And while I certainly won’t argue that part of our responsibility in the working world is growing our knowledge and staying on top of trends and market status; I will also go to my grave telling others how important it is to read your Bible and learn what God tells us. Especially if we know in our hearts who we are truly working for!
God has given us everything we need to know about relationships, how we are to love and treat others, how we are to work, how we approach adversity, fear and sorrow, how to have joy, and how to live filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. His word teaches us not only who we are to Christ, but who God the Father truly is. Reading your Bible and spending that quiet time with the Lord is the best lifetime investment you could ever make.
But are you stuck? Do you feel like you don’t know where to start? Let me ask you this. Are you willing to try for 28 days? The first book in the Bible I ever read was Matthew and it opened my eyes. The red letters are the words of Jesus!! Start there and commit to reading one chapter per day. Take a few minutes after reading and ask yourself: what can I learn from this, what do I need to change, and what do I need to pray for? You can even write your answers in a journal.
Before you open your Bible, pray this simple prayer: “Father, I thank you for this time we have together. I pray that you would open my heart and mind to receive the words you have given to me today so that I may grow closer to you. Amen”
Take that first step and enter into the best lifetime educational investment you could ever receive. Grow yourself. Grow your relationship with God your Father. He is ultimately who we work for. Invest in your future.
